CaptionLearn

Terms of service

Last updated: October 20, 2026

1. Scope

These terms govern the use of CaptionLearn (captionlearn.com), operated by Konstantin Duczek, Schillerstraße 21, 12207 Berlin ("we"). By creating an account you accept them. The service is aimed at consumers and businesses alike; where a clause applies only to consumers it says so.

2. The service

CaptionLearn shows YouTube videos with their subtitles and lets you look up the meaning of subtitle words in context and save them for review. Videos and subtitles come from YouTube; translations come from DeepL. We do not host video content and cannot guarantee that a given video has subtitles or remains available.

3. Account

You need an account with a valid email address. Keep your password confidential and tell us if you suspect misuse. You must be at least 16 years old. One account per person; do not share accounts.

You can delete your account yourself at any time from the account page. Deletion removes your account and learning data immediately and permanently.

4. Plans and prices

The free plan includes 30 word lookups per calendar month. Paid plans are billed monthly in advance via Mollie:

  • Standard: 4,90 € per month, 1,000 lookups
  • Intensive: 9,90 € per month, 3,000 lookups, higher translation quality

Prices are in euro and exempt from VAT under § 19 UStG. A word you have already looked up yourself in the same sentence of the same video, with the meaning in the same language, is free to open again and does not count. Unused lookups do not carry over.

5. Subscription, renewal and cancellation

A paid plan renews automatically each month until you stop it. You can stop renewal at any time from the account page; the plan then stays active until the end of the paid month and falls back to the free plan. If a renewal payment fails, the plan lapses at the end of the paid month.

6. Right of withdrawal (consumers)

If you are a consumer, you may withdraw from a paid subscription within 14 days without giving reasons. The period starts on the day the subscription contract is concluded, which is the day of your first payment. To withdraw, send us an unambiguous statement, for example an email to support@captionlearn.com. You may use the model form below, but you do not have to. Sending the statement before the period ends is sufficient.

If you withdraw, we refund all payments received from you without undue delay and at the latest within 14 days of receiving your statement, using the same means of payment you used.

Early expiry of the right of withdrawal. The paid plan is digital content that is not supplied on a tangible medium: the full lookup allowance of the plan is credited to your account the moment your payment is confirmed. At checkout you expressly agree that we begin performance immediately and you acknowledge that you thereby lose your right of withdrawal (§ 356 Abs. 5 BGB, Art. 16 lit. m Directive 2011/83/EU). We confirm this agreement in the order confirmation email.

Model withdrawal form. To Konstantin Duczek, Schillerstraße 21, 12207 Berlin, support@captionlearn.com: I hereby withdraw from the contract concluded by me for the supply of the following service: CaptionLearn subscription, ordered on [date]. [Name, address, date, signature if on paper.]

7. No refunds

Outside the statutory right of withdrawal, payments are final. In particular, no refund is made, in full or in part, if you stop the renewal before the end of a paid month, if you do not use your lookups, if you delete your account, or if we terminate the contract for cause and suspend or ban your account because you have breached these terms or applicable law. Our right to claim damages remains unaffected.

8. Acceptable use

Do not attempt to circumvent lookup quotas or rate limits, scrape the service, resell access, or use it to bulk-translate text. We may suspend or ban accounts that violate these terms or applicable law without notice; section 7 applies.

9. Availability and changes

We aim for high availability but do not guarantee uninterrupted service. The service depends on YouTube and DeepL, whose availability we do not control. We may change or discontinue features. A change that reduces a paid plan only takes effect from the next renewal, and we announce it at least four weeks in advance so that you can stop the renewal beforehand.

10. Your data

You keep all rights to the words and notes you save. We process personal data as described in the privacy policy.

11. Translations and liability

Translations, base forms and example sentences are generated automatically by DeepL and our lemma tables. They can be wrong, incomplete or misleading, and they are a learning aid only. We give no warranty for their accuracy and accept no liability for translation errors, for anything you say, write or decide based on them, or for the content of third-party videos and subtitles. Nothing in this section creates a liability that would not exist without it.

Beyond that we are liable without limit for intent, gross negligence, and injury to life, body or health. For slight negligence we are liable only for breach of essential contractual duties, limited to the damage typically foreseeable at contract conclusion.

12. Final provisions

German law applies, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. For consumers, mandatory consumer protection rules of your country of residence remain unaffected. If a clause is invalid, the rest of the terms stay in force. We may amend these terms with at least four weeks notice by email; if you do not object before they take effect, they are deemed accepted. Only the English version of these terms is binding; translations are provided for convenience.
