Let me tell you, when you come to Arima Onsen, loads of people say you absolutely must try the fizzy rice crackers – they’re said to ‘die’ in five seconds.

How it works

  1. 1

    Open a video

Any YouTube video with Chinese captions, including auto-generated ones. CaptionLearn fetches the transcript and keeps it in sync with the player.

  2. 2

    Tap a word

The video pauses and you get the meaning of that word as it is used in that sentence, in your own language, not a dictionary list. Powered by DeepL.

  3. 3

    Keep it, with its context

Saved words are grouped by base form. Each one remembers its sentence and timestamp, so you can jump back and hear it again.

Chinese captions come without spaces. CaptionLearn splits each line into words, so one tap is one word, not one character. Simplified and traditional both work.

Where to start

Channels that speak Chinese the whole time and have captions on nearly every video. Pick your level and open a video; the subtitles do the rest.

Questions about pricing

What does a lookup cost?

A lookup is one tap on a word. The Free plan includes 30 lookups a month, Standard 1,000 and Intensive 3,000. Videos, subtitles and saved words are unlimited on every plan.

Does a word I already looked up count again?

No. Once you have looked up a word in a sentence of a video, its meaning is kept for you. Tapping the same word in that sentence again is free and does not count against your lookups, as long as the meaning is in the same language.

Do unused lookups carry over?

No. On the first of every month you start again with your plan's full number of lookups.

What happens when I run out of lookups?

You can keep watching, open words that were already looked up and review your saved words. New lookups come back next month, or straight away if you move up a plan.

Can I change my plan?

Yes, in your account. Moving up starts as soon as the payment is confirmed; if you already pay for a plan, you are charged only the difference for the rest of the month. Moving down takes effect at your next renewal.

What happens when I cancel?

Your plan stays active until the end of the month you paid for, then you are on Free. Your saved words stay.

How long does the launch discount last?

As long as you stay subscribed. If you cancel and come back while the offer is still running, you get the same price again. After it ends, you pay the regular price.

Questions

Which Chinese videos work with CaptionLearn?

Any YouTube video that has Chinese captions, either uploaded by the creator or auto-generated by YouTube. If a video only has captions in other languages, CaptionLearn tells you which ones it found.

Do I need to know Chinese already?

No. Beginners tap more words, advanced learners tap fewer. The meaning you get is for the word as it is used in that sentence, which is what makes it useful at every level.

In which languages can I get the meanings?

Meanings can be shown in German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Swedish, Danish, Turkish, Ukrainian, Russian, Japanese, or Korean. Change it in your account.
